The Middle East Outreach Project at Tyler Junior College was established in 1991. It is the only Middle East Outreach Program at the Community College level in the United States. Its mission is to support global peace and prosperity through greater knowledge and understanding of the Middle East. Recent events have demonstrated that as members of a world community, we must be more knowledgeable about other cultures and nations.
Teaching Materials
Selective books, maps, video cassettes, audio tapes, compact discs, slide units, and curriculum guides are available for college faculty and students, pre-collegiate teachers and administrators, and interested groups and individuals from the community.
Continuing Education Classes
Tyler junior College also regularly offers Continuing Education Courses on the Middle East or other regions and countries providing educational opportunities for those who want to learn about the Middle East and global issues in a classroom format. Middle East Studies Information Service
A variety of newsletters, brochures, and other types of information are compiled to assist those who would like to further their education in the Middle East Studies and global issues.
Organizational Partnership
To advance global education, TJC is networking with North Texas Community College Consortium, Region VII Education Center, Middle East Outreach Council, Middle East Studies Association, American Association of Community Colleges, Texas Community College Teacher's Association, The American Council on International Intercultural Education, National Council for Resource Development, area churches, public schools and many community groups around the country.
International Week
Tyler Junior College conducts annual International Week activities to advance global awareness and education in the East Texas area. A variety of information, and enjoyable activities such as a cultural exhibitions, games, fashion shows, lecture series, and panel discussions as well as a food fair and a film festival are planned for the International Week. Exhibitions
Cultural exhibitions focusing on various aspects of the Middle East or countries around the world are frequently planned and will be open to the public free of charge.
Speakers Bureau
Tyler Junior College outreach project can provide or locate experts on various topics for lecture, panel discussions or forums organized by academic or community groups. The college also invites scholars regularly to speak about Middle East and global issues. Looking for a Speaker?
Workshops
Faculty development workshops on the Middle East or global issues may be designed to suit the needs of individual schools and organizations. These workshops include lectures and multi-media / audiovisual presentations. They may last as little as half a day to a period of several weeks, depending on the specific goals of the group.
