Mission:
The main goal of International Day is to inform and entertain everyone who is interested in learning more about the world around us.
Tyler
Junior College conducts its annual International Week
activities to advance global awareness and education in the east
Texas area. During the fourth week of April every year a
variety of informative, and enjoyable activities such as cultural
exhibitions, food fair, entertainment, film festival, games, fashion
shows, lecture series, and panel discussions are planned to educate
people about global issues. Students
and community volunteers represent over fifty countries every year in
TJC’s main campus.
TJC's International Day every year brings about three thousand people (students, teachers, and community members) from the East Texas area and beyond together to celebrate the global interrelatedness of the human race. In the past few years, all area public schools, Tyler Chamber of Commerce, local mass media, and numerous businesses have sponsored International week activities.
International Day is an educational event. Through looking, listening, and participating, young and old alike have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the world today, as well as traditions of the past. There is a children's corner which focuses activities specifically for young children. All activities are in the Apache Rooms and all activities are accessible to handicapped individuals. The topics at International Day includes information about different countries, culture, health, religions, music, Amnesty International, museums, food, kids activities, face painting, etc..
Following the 1997 International Day, one participating student, in her evaluation form, wrote:
Everyone shared information, clarified misconceptions, exchanged thoughts and drew closer. We found similarities and admired differences, we remembered countries and discovered new ones. As the day closed with lingering, romantic, Spanish songs, we realized the beauty all cultures have, the richness all countries offer, and the universality of humanity.
In 2002 International Day, Loletha Jones said:
International Day really touched my heart. Seeing all of the students, faculty, and community come together to celebrate this wonderful event was just heart-warming. I feel that this day made me realize how much my culture varies from other people, yet we are all human.
Arlene Mendez, a TJC student, in 2002 International Day, writes:
...
International Day was
a personal learning experience for me and in my opinion a refreshing
experience for all American citizens as a whole. International
Day was a day set aside to
introduce to some the beauties of other places of the world. I
don’t think I can forget the moment when the National Anthem was
sung and all people stood in respect of the American flag.
The hairs on my arm stood up and tears ran down my face…Unity
is a powerful thing.
Another student, Thomas Terrell (2004), writes :
International Day was more than just a project; it was more or less an experience never to be forgotten due to the people, special guests, duties I had, and most of all the fun I had being apart of it.

TJC’s International Day brings together the cultures of the world to promote appreciation and understanding of the peoples of the world and the United States’ rich and diverse heritage. This appreciation and understanding is developed through exhibits, entertainment, food, school displays, and art.
TJC's International Day activities have become an integral part of our college tradition during the new millennium and we hope that, as a result of community involvement, we enhance our activities and carry on the legacy of global education through the 21st century.
