Obelisk of Theodosius
The Hippodrome - Istanbul
circa 1490 BCE
erected on-site 4th century CE

The oldest monument in the city of Istanbul is the Obelisk of Theodosius.  It was originally from Karnak where it had been erected in honor of Thutmosis III.  Inscribed with beautiful hieroglyphs, the monument, including the base, stands approximately 82 feet tall.  At the base of the obelisk is a relief depicting Emperor Theodosius, his family, and other dignitaries watching the races from the imperial box at the original hippodrome (horse race track) that was once present on this site.
