Goreme's Fairy Chimneys and Open Air Museum

A must-stop in the central Anatolian plain is the town of Goreme.  Located in the heart of what's known as the Cappadocia region, Goreme is famous for its panoramic views, chock full of fairy chimneys. These conical, geologic forms of tufa (soft, volcanic rock) were used as shelters by many different cultures. The Hittites were among the first inhabitants to create rock-cut dwellings.  In the early Middle Ages they were used by the early Christians to escape persecution from the Arabs and pagan Romans.  Many are still in use today.  In fact, you can rent a fairy chimney of your own!  Some are used as hotel rooms for hikers in the region, while others function simply as food storage facilities.
