Gala Concert at Aspendos Theater - June 16, 1999
|
| The theater in Aspendos is the best preserved Roman theater anywhere in Turkey. It was designed during the second century CE by the architect Zeno, originally from Aspendos, and probably built under the reign of Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. The top seats and vomitorium that allowed for extremely efficient access throughout the upper reaches of theater were primarily used as seating for women. If the theater has been well preserved to this day, it is thanks to the Seljuks who used it as palace, after completing many restorations. The Aspendos Theater is still in use today for performances, a testimony to its state of preservation. It displays the most harmonious unification of stage building and auditorium.
